Satire of satire

Posted by Steven A. Smith  |  22 Jul 1:24 PM

Vanity Fair, sister publication to The New Yorker, satirized the misguided, misjudged satire of the latter's Obama cover from last week with a McCain cover of its own this week.

It's really quite clever.

Here is a link to the VF site where the cover is posted along with a funny editor's note.

Speaking of Satire.

What ever happened to Spanking the Spokesman?

http://spankingthespokesman.wordpress.com/

Was there a secret truce drawn between "White-wigged Judge Steve Smith (begins the proceedings, leaning forward from the bench and shouting: “He’s a troll!)” and the "another man’s freedom fighter" aka David Brookbank that we weren't transparently informed of?

To SCIMITAR,

I don't know what happened. I certainly never discussed it with David Brookbank or attempt to negotiate a truce.

There are several sites out there that have "spanked" us from time to tim. A number are defunct, or at least inactive.

My experience is that such efforts generally are fueled by a particular situation or series of events and as the issues fade, the time and energy put into the spanking begin to fade.

Of course, the closed loop conspiracy nuts have self-perpetuating sites that just go on and on. But they are the exception.

It also may be that opening up our organization to programmatic give and take with readers (as imperfect as our system may seem to some) has made the critique sites less important.

Criticism of the newspaper voiced in this space will reach thousands of people very quickly whereas the spanking sites have pretty limtied traffic.

Just some thoughts. None of which should be construed as suggesting I'm in any way opposed to such sites. I think they are, in general, a sign of healthy community discourse.

Two East Coast elite-zines doing what they do best - being elitist for those who believe they, too, are elite.

Used to be called idle-rich

The prescription bottles in her hand must be the drugs she stole from her charity. I like it!
