WETZLER, Mary McClure

Mary McClure Wetzler, formerly of Spokane, WA passed away August 5, 2008 at her home in Boise, ID. Born in Reardan, WA, Mary was the only child of Anna and Robert Albia McClure. Mary was raised in rural Eastern Washington, on the McClure family homestead. In 1976 this wheat and cattle ranch was named a Centennial Farm of Washington, having remained in the McClure family for over 100 years. Education was vitally important to the McClure family. They felt that Mondovi, WA was lacking in this area, so Mary was sent to boarding school in Sprague, WA, where she attended St. Joseph Academy. Although she made lifelong friends and loved the Sisters of Providence, Mom lived for the weekends when she would get to go home to Bald Ridge Road and see her horse and dog. An excellent horsewoman, mother's happiest memories were of days spent roaming the fields on horseback. Mother graduated from Cheney Normal School with a bachelor's degree in Education and Music. A gifted pianist she taught music in Ritzville, WA until her marriage in 1941 to Robert A. Wetzler M.D. During her years as a young Army officer's wife, Mom began her career as a volunteer. She talked often of rolling bandages, collecting food and sitting with the grieving families of fallen soldiers. Our parents so enjoyed the wonderful friends and experiences they collected while living at Fort Lewis, Camp Adair and Walter Reed Army Hospital during WWII. In addition to these activities, mother was a charter member of the Mondovi Grange. She was a member of the St. Augustine Altar Society, Greater Gonzaga, and the Spokane County Medical Association Woman's auxiliary. She was a volunteer for St. Anne's Children Home and the Morning Star Boy's Ranch. She learned from her parents the importance of education and was proud to see her children and five grandchildren complete their college degrees. Her home was richly filled with books, encyclopedias, almanacs, maps, dictionaries and every form of research material available. Her love of reading was passed on to all of her family. Her children at an early age knew the importance of the Dewey Decimal System, the card catalog and the Reader's Guide. We knew every inch of the Spokane Public Library. Absolutely nothing made mother happier than to know that a child or a grandchild had a research paper or project due, so she could "help" research. She would cover every available surface with pertinent articles, and earmarked books on the particular subject of the moment. She excelled at crossword puzzles and received great pleasure from learning the meaning of a new word or concept. Mother's other love was politics. She volunteered on many city and state campaigns and closely followed national and world affairs. She was anxiously awaiting the 2008 presidential election. Family was mother's greatest joy and she was kind, loving and generous with each and every one of us. She is survived by her three daughters, Patricia (Robert Oberholzer) of Boise, ID, Catherine (Richard Currie) of Bellevue, WA, and Jean (Michael Badgley) of Boise, ID; five grandchildren and twin great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Robert Wetzler. We are especially grateful to her cousin Rita Young for her many phone calls and cheerful, informative letters. FINKEL, Marian I. "Mano"

Passed away peacefully at home with her family on August 4th, 2008. Mano was born November 2, 1928 in Philipsburg, MT to Irene and Herman Hauck, the second of five children and a fourth generation Montanan. Mano joined Rainbow Girls in high school, was a past Worthy Advisor and remained a member of Eastern Star for over sixty years. After graduating high school, Mano worked as a telephone operator and had a short-lived, but highly entertaining career in food service while working her way through college. She obtained her teaching certificate from Western Montana College and began teaching in Three Forks, MT. Her impact was such that several of her original students still correspond with her. While on vacation in San Diego, she met her future husband, Joe Finkel. As Joe returned to active duty in Korea, much of the courtship was by mail, the first inkling of Mano's legendary letter writing. They were married February 7, 1954 in Philipsburg. After returning to California to conclude Joe's Navy service, their first child, Carol, was born. They moved to Bozeman, MT and both attended college at Montana State University while Mano continued teaching. After Joe's graduation, they moved to Helena, MT and added to their family with son, Jon. Mano continued teaching and also began playing bridge. Joe's career took them to Dillon, MT, Spokane, Grandview, Tacoma and Gig Harbor, WA. They returned to Spokane in 1974. Mano continued teaching and playing bridge. Along the way she also became a fabulous cook and liked nothing better than to entertain around a beautifully set table. Mano and Joe traveled extensively by cruise ship, plane, third world bus or camp trailer, always ready for a new adventure in a new location. They developed a mutual interest in Western art and Indian culture and attended numerous powwows throughout the western states and Canada. Mano was very active in Altar Guild and St. Catherine's Guild at St. David's Episcopal Church where she was a member for 34 years. She was also busy with many other activities including Red Hats, Compass Club, Curves, Welcome Wagon, several bridge clubs and maintained many, many friendships spanning decades. Generous with both her time, energy and money, Mano volunteered and supported many other organizations and charities. She is most memorable for her endless funny stories (mostly at her expense). Mano is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Irene (Pryor) andHerman Lawrence Hauck of Philipsburg and brothers-in-law Howlett Fullerton (Missoula, MT) and Don Shanklin (Lakeside, OR). Along with Joe, her husband of 54 years, daughter Carol Cone (Alan Pavlic) of Spokane and son Jon Finkel(Teresa DeLullo) of Phoenixville, PA, Mano is survived by her sister Jean Fullerton (Missoula, MT), sister Dora Butler and husband Cato (Helena, MT), brother Lawrence ("Lornie") Hauck and wife Penny (Fairbanks, AK), sister Helen Shanklin (Woodbine, OR), brother-in-law James Finkel (Ocala, FL), grandsons Justin Cone (Spokane), Zachary and Dominic Finkel (Elverson, PA) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Drs. Mackay and Meyer, staff at Deaconess Hospital, Cancer Care NW (particularly Dr. Bruce Cutter), St. Luke's Rehab, Holy Family Hospital and Hospice of Spokane for the kind and gentle care they gave to her this summer. Donations may be made to Hospice of Spokane or St. David's Episcopal Church.
