About this race: Elected to six year terms, senators must be at least 30 years old, a citizen for nine years and a resident of the state. Both houses of Congress are responsible for passing laws, declaring war, maintaining the armed forces and setting taxes, but only the Senate must approve treaties and presidential nominations.
Constituency: One of two elected officials representing the entire state. Washington currently has two Democrats in the Senate, both from the Puget Sound region.
