7th Legislative District, House Pos. 1
About this race: Because of the state's new top two primary, two Republicans are facing off in the Nov. 4 general election. One is Lincoln County architect Sue Lani Madsen. The other is Stevens County resident Shelly Short, a party insider who has Sump's endorsement. The race took an unexpected turn when a theft charge was filed against Short's husband, Mitch Short, for allegedly embezzling $3,318 from a volunteer fair organization. The Shorts have repaid the money but argue it was a simple misunderstanding, suggesting that the filing of a criminal charge amounted to "a public lynching, done to derail" the campaign.
Constituency: 7th District is the state's largest geographically, with the north and western parts of Spokane County, all of Pend Oreille, Stevens, Lincoln, Ferry and part of Okanogan counties.
Salary: $41,280
