This chat took place through AOL Instant Messenger, where Jim West used the screen name jmselton, an apparent reference to his name, James Elton West. The screen name Moto-Brock was assumed by a forensic computer consultant working for The Spokesman-Review, posing as a teenager online. Editor's note: The final two minutes of the chat are not transcribed here because a technical problem prevented the consultant from recording it. However, the consultant provided the newspaper with a summary of the entire conversation for its records. In the last minutes of this chat, according to the consultant, Jim West offered a potential internship to Moto-Brock.

motobrock34: naw, not really, BB isn't really my thing

motobrock34: not a whole lot warmer than here!
jmselton: went to Santa Cruz and walked the boardwalk and pier. watched beach volleyball and lots of guys surfing

motobrock34: I've seen it when my dad had it on
jmselton: well i went to a poker casino where they were filming it and saw a bunch of the big players.
jmselton: watched a bunch of the big players.

motobrock34: no, not really, I kind of was hoping you'd be on-line sat night but i think maybe you had left or something

motobrock34: oh, its totally cool...no worroes

motobrock34: the supercross series, it's live on the net on sat nights
jmselton: i thought so but wasn't sure. at first I thought it was bmx bikes or something.
jmselton: those guys are really crazy
motobrock34: the two guys who call the race are great, its like you are right there
jmselton: ah

motobrock34: I have a buddy who races the 125 class, the support class I guess you'd call it
jmselton: ah
motobrock34: so it's cool cause I get to listen while he's racing and hear what he's doing
jmselton: that is cool
jmselton: you going to crew him this summer?
motobrock34: he does pretty good too, for his first year as a pro
motobrock34: naw, I work on my own bikes, thats plenty
jmselton: but you could see the tour up close....
motobrock34: I don't mind working on them, but I'd mush rather ride em
motobrock34: he's like on an actual team and stuff, he's got a mechanic and the whole bit
motobrock34: the Supercross series is coming to seattle on april 16th
motobrock34: I'll be there for that and I can probably hang with him a bit then
jmselton: ah
jmselton: is he your age?
motobrock34: he's 19

jmselton: any chance you can make the circuit?
motobrock34: naw, for me it's just a sport to do

motobrock34: I got bigger plans anyway

motobrock34: I'm realistic about stuff like that....him, he's got a natural talent for that that I don't have
jmselton: at least you know it up front. but can enjoy it as a personal sport.
motobrock34: yeah, and it's a great sport to do, like football....I love playing and i'll play in college too if I can but I'm no NFL pro
motobrock34: I'd be wasting my time thinking I could be
jmselton: so college?
motobrock34: well, I just keep thinking Pullman would be a good bet
motobrock34: they have pre med

jmselton: and they actually field a good team some times

motobrock34: I think it's far enough away from spokane for me to feel comfortable about exploring too

jmselton: although many of your classmates will be there.
motobrock34: that name seems familiar
jmselton: he's a senior on the BB team.
jmselton: he was a star in Portland in high school
motobrock34: oh ok, thats where I've hear it then
jmselton: walked on at GU.
motobrock34: do you know him too?
jmselton: gets almost no playing time but has been the team captain.
jmselton: he is a real leader on the team encouraging everyone else
jmselton: i really like him
motobrock34: that's cool!
jmselton: for his attitude

jmselton: he's also a 3.8 student
motobrock34: wow

jmselton: finished undergrad in 3 years and is taking his masters now. will finish in one year. unheard of.

motobrock34: I've tried to figure out what kind of job you could have to know Bill Gates and I figured you must own like a high tech company or something

motobrock34: My Uncle has a painting business and I do that in the summer

jmselton: how much to do a whole house?
jmselton: i want to try some different colors on my walls.
motobrock34: I don't work during school though because I'm so busy with homework
motobrock34: I don't know what they charge for their jobs, they just pay me to roll the roller or spray the paint gun lol

motobrock34: I think it varies on the size of the house and stuff like that

motobrock34: oh sure, well, not ever seen one like I see in the movies, but there have been some good ones I hear

jmselton: my little brother did that when he was in high school
motobrock34: so I wouldn't want their house getting trashed
jmselton: my parents came home to holes in the walls
jmselton: pretty disappointed and upset.
motobrock34: yeah, and I wouldn't do that to my parents
motobrock34: thats also why I don't know if I will ever tell them I'm gay
jmselton: i'm old and i won't ever tell my dad. my mom passed away a few years ago so i won't tell her either. my dad wouldn't take it well.

jmselton: but i could never be into the 'gay' scene with it's politics and all.
jmselton: don't like the 'in your face' aspect of it.
motobrock34: yeah, I know what you mean and it seems like that is the two extremes to choose from

jmselton: although there as some nice guys out there that are gay and not in your face about it.
jmselton: people know and don't care as long as they don't make an issue of it.
jmselton: i've just seen too many guys decide once they come out that it becomes everyone elses problem to deal with.
