The skating life doesn't last forever - John Baldwin being the exception that proves the rule - and no matter how old, most skaters have some idea what they want to do when they can't lace it up competitively anymore.

And a few of their choices are interesting, to say the least.

With the week winding down, I decided to see where these athletes want to be headed when its' time to move on.

If you want to know as well, click this link on my on-line column, SportsLink and you can find out.

The Championship pairs free skate is underway at the Arena and the place is almost completely full. The dance competition is scheduled for tonight at 8:15.

This year a success; back in 2010?

If the criterion of success of this event is how positively the U.S. Figure Skating leadership feels about it, Spokane is a success.

If the criterion is ticket sales, Spokane is a resounding success.

At a Wednesday news conference, USFS president Ron Hershberger and executive director David Raith gushed over Spokane and the way the event was being run.

"This city has proven that a medium-size city can host this event at the highest level," Raith said.

Hershberger announced that Spokane had "blasted through the atmosphere" the ticket mark, with 146,311 tickets sold as of Wednesday, exceeding by a wide margin the old mark of 125,345 sold in Los Angeles in 2002.

The duo also hinted that a bid from Spokane for the 2010 event, the next championship that has yet to be awarded - 2008 will be in St. Paul and 2009 in Cleveland - would be well received.

The decision will be made soon. With the 2010 Olympics scheduled for February 12 through 28 in Vancouver, British Columbia, a championship in Spokane a few weeks earlier might make sense.

Stay tuned.

Not everyone associated with the coverage of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships is a skating illiterate – OK, it's just me. I'm the only one who is bewildered by what I'm watching. Everyone else is a freakin' genius.

As I'm sure everyone is who finds their way to this blog.

But if you're not a skating savant, I'm here for you.

As the overseer of the S-R's SportsLink blog, I'm at the championships as a representative of the mass of sports fans who know skating exists, but may not have experienced it. You're curious about this national event in your town, but ...

My first report on what I'm seeing is here for you to peruse, criticize, laugh at – whatever. Remember, many of these observations might seem, well, basic to a figure skating fan – the equivalent, I'm sure, of explaining an RBI to a baseball nut.

But I'm trying my best. And I guarantee you I respect the effort of everyone involved with this event – though I don't think I will be taking a second mortgage to attend the Worlds.
