WE HAVE AN UPSET AND A BACK FLIP!!
Scott Smith who is known for landing the only clean quadruple jump at last years nationals chose to omit it from his routine this evening. He landed two triple axels but lost valuable ground in the component score. 196.59
Stephen Carriere is another athlete in the men’s field opting not to perform the quadruple due to high risk and lack of reward. His opening triple axel lost it’s axis causing a step out on the landing, however his jump technique is impeccable. He could be a dominating factor in the years to come. 189.04
Evan Lysacek also landed a quadruple toe, triple toe combination in warm-up. The game was on in warm up and continued from there. Lysacek opened with quadruple toe, triple toe combination… amazing. His good fortune continued with triple axel, triple loop, and triple salchow all flawless. The second triple axel came later in the program and was accompanied by a triple toe. It was a fantastic skate!! 248.88
Johnny Weir landed a beautiful quadruple toe, triple toe combination in warm-up but was unable to continue the focus through out the program. He opened with triple axel but was unable to do the scheduled triple toe afterwards. He then landed quadruple toe with a two foot and possible under rotation. Later in the program he struggled, as he fell on triple flip and aborted his second triple axel. It was not his night. He was visibly upset but very gracious. 213.20
Ryan Bradley’s triple axel, triple toe combination was unreal, considering he was off axis and still able to land it. The triple lutz that followed was text book, however his second triple axel turned into a double. The rest of the program was clean, fun and exciting. Bradley is responsible for one of the biggest upsets of the year and rewarded Spokane with a back flip. 219.21

Great for Evan. Heartbroken for Johnny. Ryan was great, but what were the judges smoking?
I wasn't home all today so I relied on my DVR to cover the ladies and men free skate but, it stopped recording the last 7 minutes (the basketball game went over). I was able to watch the ladies and the beginning of the men free skate and then my DVR stopped in the middle of Johnny Wier skate! Fortunaely I was able to watch Evan Lysacek skate his program, which was unbelievable! Too bad for Johnny, you could clearly see he was not in it. I only wish I could have seen Ryan Bradely skate his heart out to grab the Silver.
Does anyone know where I can see the footage for Johnny and Ryan's performances?
i thought ryan skating the HECK out of that program... he absolutely deserved to beat johnny. it's tough to feel thaaaat badly for him when evan and ryan skated such stunning programs. anyone know where one can see footage of the medal ceremonies? tv never covers them anymore. :(
The Men's Free Program was fantastic, as was the quality of all of the skating this week. I was glued to my seat. I love Johnny Weir, and even though it was not his night, none of the other men can match his artistry. I believe we have gotten away from the fact that figure skating is about the artistry and beauty on ice, and no one today more examplifies that than Johnny Weir. Congrats to Evan but do not count Johnny out.
The skating this week was fantastic. Spokane put on a great show, not to be forgotten soon. The men's final was electrifying. Though Evan and Ryan are certainly due their congrats, the most interesting man in skating has to be Johnny Weir. He is unequaled in his artistic intepretation. Athletic ability is to be rewarded but does not outway artistic impression in this sport. When artistic qualities are again recognized as the foremost quality of a skater, maybe we will look at the outcomes differenty.
i'm baffled by the opinions that johnny weir trumps evan with his artistry. while i agree that he is a beautiful artistic skater, for YEARS i've much preferred evan's stylistic interpretation. i think it's mature, intelligent, and *dramatic* in a way that weir's style just isn't -- johnny tends toward the over-the-top and arm-flinging (like that of many russian skaters, which i've NEVER liked.) i suppose that could just be a personal perference for one style and look over another, but... there you are. does anyone remember evan's marshall's exhibition program last year (the one w/ kwan and cohen in the final)? STUNNING. now that was artistry.
as to the new scoring system... i very much think the artistic quality of skating is being recognized...it's just taken a while for skaters to realize that they *can* put together a program that gets maximum point value for their athleticism but also does not ignore transitions, choreography, and musical interpretation. evan's just proved that, and i think he has even more in him... hopefully we'll see it at worlds! :)
Jskate,
Yes you can view any performance at www.icenetwork.com. It's worth seeing.
